EDUCATION 1980-2019

1980 Advanced First Aid, and Open Water Life Guard Training American Red Cross

Certification for open-water environments.  Training: surveillance skills, rescue skills, first aid training and professional rescuer courses including advanced life support and CPR.  Professional lifeguard responsibilities; interacting with the public and addressing uncooperative patrons. 

1981 Emergency Medical Technician Certification Training

First Responder – Knowledge, skills and attitudes to function in the capacity of a first responder. Emergency Medical Technology – Knowledge, techniques and development of professional attitudes practiced by an EMT providing out-of-hospital emergency medical care. 

1982 Warner Southern College  – HEART

Hunger Education and Resources Training Institute

A unique interdenominational training center designed to prepare people to serve effectively in much of the third world. Relief and development skills are acquired through “hands-on” experience as well as classroom training. Students reside in the village and are provided the opportunity for hands-on application of the many valuable skills integrated into H.E.A.R.T.’s curriculum.  Course Work: Appropriate Technology, Small Animal Husbandry, Sustainable Agriculture, Primary Health, Nutrition/Food Technology, Cross-Cultural Communication/Community Development

1983-1991 Franciscan Third Order Regular Study Apprenticeship

Two year intensive study apprenticeship under the direction of the Franciscan Friars at San Pedro Retreat and Conference Center as a research assistant, camp counselor and program assistant while learning the art of designing retreats, programs and camps based around authentic hospitality and personal transformation.  This immersion into the studying and experimentation of both program design and facility settings that provided for optimum learning, communications and group dynamic paralleled my undergraduate study at Rollins College as a living lab for my course work in organizational communications and education.

WORK EXPERIENCE 1979-2019

1979-1990 Life Guard

Served in various summer jobs, Boy Scout Camp, and local community pools as waterfront safety coordinator, CPR Water Safety Instructor and lead life guard/supervisor.

1979-1981 Recreation Counselor

Designed, created coordinated activities to engage 65 mentally challenged men ranging from 20 to 80 years old with various levels of needs.  Duties included having fun, throwing balls, making music, playing, singing, arts & crafts, baseball outings, camping trips, Boy Scouts, sporting events, and special activities.

1982-1983 Emergency Medical Technician

Served as an ambulance driver-EMT in Atlantic City N.J. backing up the city fire and rescue units in major incidents, transport of sick.  Performed all duties within the scope of Emergency Medical Training.

1983-1991 San Pedro Retreat and Conference Center, Diocese of Orlando; Under the direction of the Franciscan Third Order Regular

Summer Camp Counselor & Waterfront Safety Instructor; Youth Retreat Director; Summer Camp Director. Responsible for program research, design and implementation for adult and children’s retreats, seminars and workshops including interviewing, hiring and training seasonal staff; program design, management, implementation, evaluation, educational leadership team training, and over sight of seasonal counselor staff.

1990-1991 Earth Ethics Camp Director

Rollins College-San Pedro Center joint internship project directed by Dr. Harry Morell of Rollins College School of Education.  Masters credits in: Curriculum Design, and Evaluation.  The Earth Ethics Camp was designed to merge Earth Sciences with Creation Spirituality to create a learning model that honored both traditions while encouraging lifelong learning skills.  Staff was able to earn college credits as part of this learning camp.  250 students spent 6 different weeks with our staff of 15 learning about emerging environmental issues while studying their interrelated relationship to the wetland eco-system found on the San Pedro Campus and throughout Florida.

1991-1995 Rollins College, Center for Lifelong Education

Program Coordinator, later promoted to Associate Director, for the design and marketing of professional business courses, non-credit classes and liberal arts programs.  Responsible for course offerings, hiring instructors, marketing programs during the Fall and Spring semesters, program evaluation, trend identification in continuing education and, coordinating guest speaker luncheon series.

Director of Summer Education Programs and Conferences.  Responsibilities: Curriculum development, budget management, hiring instructors, program evaluations, marketing strategy, training, contract negotiations, trend identification, and program logistics for 75 member staff serving over 800 children grades k-8 on college campus during summer months while overseeing education conference groups who rented the facility for programs during the summer break.  Programs netted over $800,000. yearly for the college.

1996-1997 Education Fellowship – Renaissance of Discovery

Research Project: Study the Impact of Technology & Human Potential in Education & Business. Result: Renaissance of Discovery educational program which encourages students to access and rethink the way they currently view and apply technology.

1997-1999 Trainer, Motivational Program Development

Buena Vista Hospitality Group, The Palace, Walt Disney World

Executive Leadership Training and Employee Motivational Programs focusing on visioning, generated and branding an employee driven culture of genuine hospitality by focusing on the internal communications of the resort staff and their interaction with the guests.

This was achieved by using a retreat based format for training, motivational & leadership development to produce performance based teams, manager coaches, peer mentors, ongoing quality and continuous improvement benchmarks; a measurable, consistent, genuine hospitality environment that has a primary Focus of World Class Service and Innovation.  Participants: General Manager, Directors and Management Teams and total 1200 member staff.

PGA National Resort, Palm Beach Gardens, FL

Organizational Development for 800 employee staff of Professional Golf Association National Resort and Spa. Participants: President, CEO, General Manager & all Department Heads including all staff from Convention Services, Food & Beverage Catering, Engineering, Marketing, as well as Management Team Leaders and their staff.  Focus: To foster a culture of genuine hospitality for both guests and employees.
